The field of medicine has grown over the years with several new fields over the years. One of which is the field of gynecology. What is gynecology? Also referred as “the science of women, it primarily deals with the entire female reproductive system. Just like any medicine specialty, doctors on this field need to have latest tools to ensure the safety of their patients.
Due to the delicacy of women’s health, obstretician and gynecologist need to choose the right tools to address their needs. Here are some of the most common ones:
1. Venthouse
This tool operates like a vacuum. This gynecology instrument helps extract a baby during childbirth by partially pulling it out. If the patient does not want to use this, vaginal forceps can be applied.
2. Vaginal Forceps
This gynecology instrument looks like a pair of tongs that comes in various sizes usually used during surgeries. It allows the physician to tightly hold onto anything that needs to be taken out from the body as the practice requires. In the case of obstetrics, the surgeon can use vaginal forceps to hold the head of the baby for an easy delivery process.
3. Speculum
This tool is also known as a diopter or a dioptra. This is an important gynecology tool that is put in the body cavity (particularly the female vagina) to create a small opening. The physician can also use this instrument to examine the cervix better. It is disposable since it is normally built out of plastic.
4. Ultrasound
Anyone who knows a pregnant friend or relative will be familiar with this instrument. It is considered one of the most widespread gynecology tools in the medical field. Ultrasound allows doctors to check on the status of the baby (or babies) inside the female womb. Aside from that, it can also analyze the other female reproductive organs for any complications.
Having a baby can be challenging for couples especially for the mother-to-be. It can be pretty scary, and learning the ins-and-outs of pregnancy will give you some peace of mind. If you are planning or expecting a baby, don’t hesitate to ask your doctor questions about your pregnancy and other related issues.
